Maintaining a Car Battery - Basic Car Care Advice
The modern battery is a plastic box divided into six cells and filled with an electrically conductive sulfuric acid solution called an electrolyte. The electrolyte interacts with the battery's electrodes - metal plates that contain lead - to produce 12 volts of electricity. The power flows in an unbroken loop from the positive terminal, through the car's wiring, and back to the negative terminal.
Most batteries today are of the sealed type, with a charge indicator. But still in use are batteries with removable clamps sealing the cells; these must be topped up periodically with electrolytes.
Battery acid is toxic, corrosive, and explosive. Never smoke near a car battery. If leaving a car parked for 30 days or more, disconnect the negative cable so that power cannot drain from the battery. If your battery is beyond repair and you need to know where to sell your car in the Dallas area, click to the left to get started.
